Associate
Jane E. Lippman is a litigation associate with Gilchrist & Rutter. Ms. Lippman’s trial and appellate practice focuses on federal and state civil litigation, including commercial, real estate, construction, and labor and employment disputes. Ms. Lippman has a range of experience litigating on behalf of both private and public sector clients, in courts as well as before arbitrators. Her previous experience includes practicing at an international, California-based law firm and the New York City Department of Education, Office of the General Counsel.
Ms. Lippman received her J.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Law, where she graduated 6th in her class, magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, and served as a Note & Comment Editor of the Wisconsin Law Review. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Ms. Lippman was also awarded the Andre Saltoun Prize for Academic Excellence and the Duane Mowry Scholarship for Academic Achievement, and she received the State Bar of Wisconsin Awards for the Highest Grades in Torts, Property, Trademarks, Constitutional Law II, Trusts and Estates, and Environmental Law and Institutions.
Ms. Lippman earned her B.A., magna cum laude, from Barnard College, Columbia University, after attending the University of Pennsylvania, where she was a Benjamin Franklin Scholar.
- Representative Experience
- Prosecuted public entity for regulatory taking arising out of illegal conditions imposed on condominium conversion. Major work included research and development of a damages theory for multi-million dollar claim.
- Represented a commercial airline in a Ninth Circuit appeal after entry of an adverse judgment for breach of contract; a defense contractor in the California Supreme Court who sought to resolve an issue of law regarding the tort of intentional interference with prospective economic advantage; a major oil corporation in the Ninth Circuit seeking remittitur of a punitive damages award; movie studios and record companies in the Central District of California prosecuting copyright violations against internet file-sharing services.
- Defended a large bookstore chain against a group of independent book sellers alleging violations of the Robinson-Patman Act.
- Defended financial management firm and managing members in litigation involving claims arising under the Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and SEC Rule 10b-5, the Investment Advisors Act of 1940, and state blue sky and consumer protection laws.
- Represented public agency in labor arbitration hearings and proceedings pursuant to New York State Education and Civil Service Law. Responsibilities included litigation of cases from inception through trial, as well as representation of client in mediations and settlement negotiations.
- Supervised multi-million dollar products liability lawsuit in multi-district state litigation, including strategizing with local counsel and drafting all motions.
